WAYNE, N.J. — The New Jersey City University women's volleyball team closed out its 2023 season tonight, Tuesday, Oct. 31. The Gothic Knights traveled to North Jersey to take on New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) foe William Paterson University, but fell to the Pioneers in three sets to finish up their campaign.
NJCU (2-21, 0-8 NJAC) stated off the first set going point-for-point with the Pioneers (23-5, 5-3 NJAC), trailing by just one at 7-6 early on. After a WPU run made it 14-8 in favor of the home squad, the Green and Gold kicked it into high gear to tie it up twice, first t 14-14 and again at 16-16. Unfortunately, trailing 18-17, the Gothic Knights dropped seven of the final nine points as William Paterson took the set, 25-19 to go up 1-0.
Set number two saw NJCU stay within a few at 11-8 early on, including a trio of kills from junior co-captain right-side hitter
Brenda Gonzalez (Union City, N.J./Dickinson). However, a couple of strong runs allowed the Pioneers to take the set, 25-12, and go up by two. In the final set, the Gothic Knights trailed early at 7-2, but came back to trail by just one at 10-9. Sophomore outside hitter
Marina Millett (Matawan, N.J./Saint John Vianney) contributed a pair of kills over that stretch. At that point, though, the Pioneers closed out the set, 25-15, and took the three-set win.
Highlights:
- Senior setter
Katrina Nguyendon (Union, N.J./Union) closed out the match with 18 assists and finishes her career with 990 overall. She leaves the program ranked eighth all-time in career assists.
- Gonzalez finished with a team-high nine kills to go with four digs and ends the season with 171 kills overall.
- Millett had five kills and five digs. She, along with Nguyendon and Gonzalez, finished the season with a team-high-tying 73 sets played.
- Rookie libero
Carly Everett (York, Pa./York Catholic) led all players with a match-best 15 digs, finishing the season with a team-high 280. Those are the most digs by a Gothic Knight freshman since the 2019 season.
