Men's Soccer Lands Three on All-NJAC Squad

November 02, 2023

PITMAN, N.J. — The New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) released its 2023 All-Conference honors for men's soccer this morning, Thursday, Nov. 2, and the New Jersey City University men's soccer squad landed a trio of student-athletes among the honorees. Junior forward Danny Tobon (Clifton, N.J./Clifton) led the pack as a Second Team selection, while senior forward Maximo Vargas (Montevideo, Uruguay/The British Schools) and sophomore back Jason Salamanca (Elizabeth, N.J./Elizabeth) both garnered Honorable Mention accolades.

Tobon, a Honorable Mention selection in his first season with the Gothic Knights, followed up that campaign with an 18-point season in 2023, which led his squad. He also had a team-high seven goals and was tied for second with four assists. Additionally, the second-year Green and Gold striker earned NJAC Offensive Player of the Week for the first time in his career back on Sept. 18.

Vargas has now earned All-NJAC honors in all three of his seasons with NJCU and is now a two-time Honorable Mention selection to go with last year's First Team accolades. He ranks second on the Gothic Knights in both goals (6) and points (14) and is tied for fourth in assists (2). Over his three seasons, he now ranks in the top 10 all-time in program history in five different career statistical categories: tied for second in game-winning goals (9), seventh in goals (27), shots on goal (79) and shots on goal per game (1.55) and eighth in points (62).

Last but not least, for the first time in his career, Salamanca has earned All-NJAC honors with his Honorable Mention recognition. The outside back saw action in 16 of 17 games, making 13 starts on the outside, seeing just under 1,000 minutes on the pitch. He also tallied quite a bit of offense from the backline, tallying a goal and two assists for four total points. Defensively, Salamanca was part of a defensive unit that held opponents to a .491 shots on goal percentage.
