AMHERST, Mass. — The New Jersey City University women's basketball team traveled up north to square off with #RV Amherst College on Monday evening, Nov. 27. The Gothic Knights got yet another strong performance out of senior guard
Damaris Rodriguez (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus), but ultimately fell to the Mammoths, 70-55.
For NJCU (2-2), Rodriguez was actually held off the board in the first quarter against Amherst (5-0), but sophomore guard
Tahirah Kelley (Linden, N.J./Immaculate Conception) scored all seven of the Gothic Knights points over the first 10 minutes. The reigning New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Player of the Week bounced back with seven in the second quarter and her team trailed, 35-21, at the half.
Rodriguez then exploded for 11 points on an efficient 5-of-7 shooting in the third quarter as NJCU outscored the Mammoths, 21-18, coming out of the locker room, cutting the lead down to eight at one point, 49-41, with 1:58 to go in the period. However, the Gothic Knights were unable to get any closer over the remainder and fell to Amherst.
Highlights:
- Rodriguez finished with a game-best 24 points to go with a team-high four assists.
- Kelley ended with nine points and five boards over 22 minutes before fouling out.
