December 16, 2023

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. — The New Jersey City University men's wrestling team traveled to Pennsylvania this morning, Saturday, Dec. 16, to take on King's College (Pa.) and Keystone College on King's campus.

NJCU (2-9) began the day with a 42-13 loss to the hosting Monarchs (2-1). Sophomore 149-pounder Zack Vera (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) took home his first of two victories on the day, winning his first match by decision. NCAA National Qualifier and fifth-year team captain, #2 in the region Jeff Johnson (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) also took home his first of two victories at 157 pounds against King's, winning by major decision. NJCU lost its other two matches at 141 and 165 via decision and fall respectively, and King's got their remaining points via forfeit.

The Gothic Knights got off to a much better start in their second match against Keystone (3-7). Senior 133-pounder George Rivera (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) got the Gothic Knights on the board early, winning by fall in the third period and getting himself to 2-0 on the day, and freshman 141-pounder Carlos Dominguez (Madison, N.J./Madison) followed up Rivera's performance with a victory by fall in the first period. Johnson took home his second victory of the day early in the first period, but aside from a Keystone forfeit at 149, that would be all the scoring for the Green and Gold, as they fell 30-24.
