Frezzo, Guerrero Go Undefeated as #9 Women's Wrestling Competes at Northeast Regional Duals

December 03, 2023

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. — The #9-ranked New Jersey City University women's wrestling team was one of five teams to compete in the National College Women's Wrestling Championships (NCWWC) Northeast Regional Duals today, Sunday, Dec. 3, on the campus of #10-ranked East Stroudsburg University. It was a tough day for the Gothic Knights overall, however individually, junior Izabella Frezzo (East Rutherford, N.J./Becton Regional) and senior Sandy Guerrero (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) each posted 4-0 records. Junior Kayla Zeppetelli (Little Ferry, N.J./Ridgefield Park) was also 2-1 on Sunday.

Frezzo, ranked #5 in the nation by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) at 116 pounds, started off with a 10-0 technical fall (2:25) over Tatiana Walker of #5-ranked Sacred Heart University. She then defeated Gianna Silva of Western New England University via fall (1:06). Against #22-ranked Elmira College, Frezzo pinned her opponent Brittain Chew in just 31 seconds. Win number four on the day came over Natalie Dunn of the hosting-Warriors with a 16-6 technical fall.

Zeppetelli wrestled in three of four matches on the day and kicked things off with a sudden victory decision (8-8) over Aliza Leander of the fifth-ranked Pioneers. Her second win of the day came via fall at 1:52 over Tess Clabuagh of the 22nd-ranked Soaring Eagles.

Guerrero, who went 4-0, only wrestled one time on the day and earned three other wins via forfeit. That being said, the #3-ranked 191-pounder in the nation made it count, toppling #4-ranked Madeline Hodges of Sacred Heart for the second time this season via a 10-0 technical fall (2:16). She previously bested Hodges at the ESU Open in the 191-pound championship match.
