Three More Gothic Knights Pick up Weekly NJAC Honors

February 13, 2023

PITMAN, N.J. — The New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) released its weekly honors today, Monday, Feb. 13, and three New Jersey City University student-athletes picked up accolades. Senior opposite/outside hitter James Bajor (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) was named Men's Volleyball Player of the Week, while junior guard Damaris Rodriguez (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) and freshman forward Jalynn Clark (Irvington, N.J./Elizabeth) swept the NJAC's weekly Women's Basketball honors.

Bajor helped NJCU men's volleyball post a 2-1 record – and nearly a 3-0 mark – over the weekend at the Arcadia University Tournament in Glenside, Pa. He finished with a team-high 47 kills (3.36/set) on 121 swings with 20 errors (.223 hitting percentage) to go with 29 digs (2.07/set) – second on the team – and a team-best 15 total blocks (1.07/set) for 58.5 points (4.18/set). The co-captain started off with nine kills, seven digs, four total blocks and an ace in the four-set win over Baruch College on Saturday, Feb. 11. Then, in the Sunday, Feb. 12, early match – a five-set win over Eastern Mennonite University – he notched a team-high 13 kills, nine digs, five total blocks and another two aces. Finally, in the last match of the weekend – a tough five-set loss to host Arcadia – he notched a team- and career-best 24 kills on 50 swings with four errors (.400) to go with a match-high-tying 13 digs and a team-high-tying six total blocks. It was his first double-double of the season and fifth of his career.

Rodriguez once again dominated all aspects of the game this past week and helped lead NJCU women's basketball to a 2-0 mark and a bye into the semifinal round of the 2023 NJAC Tournament. The nation's leading scorer finished averaging 26.0 points, 9.5 assists and .0 rebounds over 39.0 minutes per game and also shot 46.5 percent from the floor (20-for-43), including 5-of-9 (55.6) from long-range. She began with game-highs in points (30), assists (14) and rebounds (10) for the first triple-double of her career as she led NJCU to the season sweep over Rowan University at home on Wednesday night, Feb. 8, 93-76. Rodriguez then led Jersey City in scoring (22 points) to go with six rebounds and a game-best five assists in Saturday's 63-52 win at Stockton University in Galloway, N.J., clinching the quarterfinal bye in NJACs. She has scored 20-plus points in eight straight and in 20 of 22 games this season and She currently leads the country in made field goals (209), second in field goal attempts (503) and fourth in assists per game (6.2).

Clark played a strong role off the bench last week, as well. The rookie averaged 9.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.5 blocks over 19.2 minutes per game. She began with a career-high-tying 10 points to go with seven rebounds, a block and a steal in the 93-76 home win over the Profs on Wednesday night. Then, in Saturday's 63-52 win at the Ospreys to clinch the quarterfinal bye, Clark chipped in eight points, three rebounds and a game-best two blocks against the Ospreys.

This is Bajor's first-career NJAC Player of the Week honor, adding it to his conference Defensive Player of the Week award from last March and two-career Skyline Conference Weekly honors. Rodriguez has now won three straight NJAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week honors and five of the conference's last six — she has won 11 for her career. Clark has now won NJAC Rookie of the Week twice this season.
