Gothic Knights Notch Three More Weekly NJAC Accolades

March 20, 2023

PITMAN, N.J. — The New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) released its award winners for the past week of action today, Monday, March 20, and the New Jersey City University Gothic Knights landed three student-athletes on the list of honorees. NJCU men's tennis junior captain Nico Teynie (Rouen, France/Lycée Val de Seine) was named East Division Player of the Week, while his teammate, freshman Pedro Caro-Accino Roca (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain/British School of Gran Canaria), was named East Division Rookie of the Week. Last but not least, freshman middle blocker Amaru Perales (Harrison, N.J./Harrison) of the men's volleyball squad was named Rookie of the Week.

Teynie helped NJCU to a 7-2 win at Goucher College on Friday, March 17, down in Baltimore, going 2-0 without dropping a single game. He began, paired with fellow junior Alejandro Ley (Las Palmas, Spain/I.E.S. Politécnico), at first doubles and won 8-0 before sweeping his opponent from the Gophers, 6-0, 6-0, at first singles. Caro was part of a second doubles team, paired with sophomore Joaquin Pluis (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Santa Felicitas), that won their match 8-7(6). He followed that up with a big, 6-4, 6-1, win at third singles to end his day at 2-0.

Perales played and started in all three matches (and all nine sets) this past week as NJCU went 3-0. The rookie finished with team highs in kills (34, 3.78/set) and points (36.5, 4.06/set) over a trio of Skyline Conference sweeps and hit very efficiently with just seven errors over 59 swings (.458 hitting percentage). He began with a match-best nine kills and just one error on 17 swings (.417) to go with a couple of blocks in the home 3-0 win over Yeshiva University on Tuesday, March 14. Then, in the Saturday morning, March 18, 3-0 win at Purchase College, Perales once again had a match-best 11 kills with four errors on 20 swings (.350) to go with a couple of digs against the Panthers. Finally, that afternoon he notched a career- and match-high 14 kills and just two errors on 22 swings (.545) to go with two more blocks in the sweep of St. Joseph's University-Brooklyn.

This is the first NJAC East Player of the Week honor of 2022-23 for Teynie, who now has four for his career. For Caro and Perales, this is the first-career honor for either.
