Baseball Win Streak Halted at McDaniel in 13-5 Defeat

Hernandez Hits Team-Leading Fifth Homer in Loss

WESTMINSTER, Md. — The New Jersey City University baseball team played its fourth game in five days on Sunday, March 26, as the Gothic Knights hit the road to face McDaniel College. Jersey City outhit the Green Terror, 13-10, but fell by a final score of 13-5.

NJCU (6-9) fell behind to McDaniel (12-6) early but put up a couple of runs in the top of the fifth. Senior second baseman Jimmy Vizzoni (Hamilton, N.J./Trenton Catholic) got things started with a leadoff single. Freshman third baseman Dom Yarson (Ewing, N.J./Ewing) followed with another single in the next at-bat. Sophomore leftfielder John Abrahamsen (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township) then singled home Vizzoni from second for Jersey City's first run of the game. Junior Ali Pompey (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic) pinch hit with one out and a sac fly plated Yarson.

Hernandez then scored next with two outs and a runner on in the top of the seventh for his fifth home run of the season. In the top of the eighth, junior designated hitter Garrett Allo (Monroe, N.J./East Brunswick Tech) started with a one-out double and then Vizzoni plated him with a double of his own.

On the mound, freshman Jeff Osborne (Spotswood, N.J./Spotswood) tossed a scoreless and hitless seventh, along with a strikeout before Vizzoni tossed a scoreless eighth, as well.

Highlights:
- Graduate student first baseman Ricky Voss (Eatontown, N.J./Monmouth Regional) was 2-for-3 with a walk. He is currently riding a six-game hitting streak.
- Junior leftfielder/catcher Bryan Fernandez (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville War Memorial) was 2-for-5, while Allo was 2-for-4 with a double and a run.
- Abrahamsen was 2-for-2 with a RBI, a walk and a run. Vizzoni was 3-for-4 with two doubles, a RBI and a run.

Up Next:
NJCU returns to action for five straight home games, including four next week. Penn State Abington comes to the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex on Tuesday, March 28, for a 3:30 p.m. first pitch. Muhlenberg College then does the same on Thusday, March 30, before New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play is scheduled to begin on Saturday, April 1, with an 11:30 a.m. doubleheader against The College of New Jersey.
