Softball Splits at Home Against John Jay

Castro, Dabbadie Shine Against Bloodhounds

JERSEY CITY, N.J. — The New Jersey City University softball team split a home non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, March 28, at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex. Led by another stellar complete game shutout for junior Sidnie Dabbadie (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs), the Gothic Knights took game one, 8-0, in six innings over John Jay College before the Bloodhounds came away with the 5-2 win in game two. Junior Abby Castro (Clifton, N.J./Passaic County Tech) was a factor all day, finishing with an .857 on-base percentage, going 3-for-4 and walking three times, as well.

Game 1: NJCU 8, John Jay 0 (6 innings)
As mentioned, Dabbadie once again got the start in the top half of the doubleheader and she went 6.0 scoreless with seven strikeouts, allowing just three hits and a walk for her sixth victory of the season. She drops her ERA to a measly 0.88 with another shutout outing and has limited opposing batters to a .133 average over her first nine appearances in 2023 — Dabbadie has also not allowed a run (earned or unearned) in 24.1 consecutive innings, dating back to March 18.

After a 1-2-3 top of the first, junior Mariah Villanueva (Jersey City, N.J./McNair Academic) and Castro drew back-to-back one-out walks to start the home half before Dabbadie gave herself all the run support she would need with a run-scoring single to center, making it 1-0. NJCU then had its biggest inning of the afternoon, scoring four in the bottom of the second to make it 5-0. With the bases loaded and no one out, Mariah drew a walk to force in the second run of the day. Then, after a John Jay (8-9) pitching change, Castro did the same with a free base to make it 3-0. Dabbadie came back to inflict some more damage with an RBI single to right. Sophomore Jaelynn Barrios (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) followed with a one-out infield single to score Mariah from third to close it out.

Jersey City pushed two more across in the bottom of the third, starting with a one-out sac fly by Mariah to scored freshman Natalie Rosales (Union City, N.J./Jose Marti STEM Academy) from third. Then, Castro singled to left to make it 7-0, as junior Emily Tunney (Mays Landing, N.J./Oak Crest) scored. The Gothic Knights looked to end it in the bottom of the fifth, but a wild sequence including a runners interference forced another inning of play. That being said, sophomore twin sisters Marietta Angulo (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) and Grace Angulo (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) played roles in bringing the game to a close in the bottom of the sixth. Grace led off with a walk before getting over to second on a wild pitch. Marietta then bunted her over to third with a successful sacrifice before freshman Yavelly Marrero brought game two one to a close with just one out in the bottom of the sixth, putting the ball in play to allow Grace to scored from third.

Game 2: John Jay 5, NJCU 2
The Bloodhounds got on the board early with no outs in the top of the first, making it 1-0, and then again for one more in the second, making it 2-0. The Gothic Knights got back to within one thanks to a double from Castro, which scored Marrero from second, as well.

After a scoreless fourth, the Bloodhounds struck first in top of the fifth with three runs to make it 5-1 before Jersey City got one back in the bottom of the fifth. Tunney led off with the second triple of her collegiate career — and first this season — before coming home shortly thereafter via a wild pitch. The Gothic Knights, despite some strong pitching over the final 2.2 innings from Marrero, were unable able to overcome John Jay's lead in the loss.

Highlights:
- Dabbadie was .500 at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI.
- Mariah was 1-for-3 with two runs, two RBI and a whopping four walks. Overall, the Gothic Knights drew 15 walks on the afternoon against the Panthers.

Up Next:
NJCU returns to action at the Gerrity on Thursday March 30, for a doubleheader against Lehman College at 3 P.M.
