NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — The New Jersey City University softball program opened up its 2023 season on Sunday, March 5, as part of the FastPitch Dreams Spring Classic. The Gothic Knights opened with a five-inning, 10-0 win over Dean College in the morning, followed by a hard-fought 8-5 loss to Medaille University in the evening.
NJCU 10, Dean 0 (5 innings)
The Gothic Knights (1-1) were quickly explosive in this one, as eight different players recorded at least one hit against the Bulldogs (0-2). In the circle, junior
Sidnie Dabbadie (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs) was dominant and tossed a complete-game, one-hit shutout while striking out nine batters. Offensively, after a one-out triple by sophomore
Mya Villanueva (Jersey City, N.J./McNair Academic), she eventually scored on an error two at-bats later to make it 1-0.
Jersey City then blew up for five runs in the bottom of the second. Sophomore
Jaelynn Barrios (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) led off with a double. Then, with two outs, junior
Emily Tunney (Mays Landing, N.J./Oak Crest) brought her home with a one-run single. Villanueva then reached safely on a fielders choice, while Tunney made it in to second safely, as well. With two runners on, sophomore catcher
Abby Castro (Clifton, N.J./Passaic County Tech) plated tunney with a single. Then Dabbadie cleared the bases with a two-run triple before rookie
Natalie Rosales (Union City, N.J./Jose Marti STEM Academy) doubled to score Dabbadie, making it 6-0.
NJCU scratched another across in the bottom of the third as freshman
Fran Polanco (Union City, N.J./Union City) cross the plate thanks to passed ball. The Green and Gold then scored three more to make it 10-0 in the bottom of the fourth. With one out and runners on first and second, freshman
Yavely Marrero (Perth Amboy, N.J./Perth Amboy) singled home pinch runner sophomore
Lisbet Bernabe (Passaic, N.J./Passaic) to make it 8-0. Then, Barrios knocked in Rosales with a one-run single, as well. Polanco closed it out by reaching on a fielder's choice as Marrero was able to reach home safely.
Highlights vs. Dean:
- Villanueva was 1-for-3 with two runs and a triple.
- Castro, Rosales, Tunney and Barrios were all 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored apiece.
- Tunney stole a base, as well, while Rosales and Barrios each had doubles.
Medaille 8, NJCU 5
Jersey City took the early 1-0 and then 3-2 lead over the Mavericks (2-0) in this one. Villanueva reached with a one-out hit-by-pitch in the bottom of the first before Dabbadie doubled to bring her home for the early lead. Then, after Medaille scored twice in the top of the second, NJCU got two more in the home half. Junior
Kate Herman (Fords, N.J./East Brunswick Votech) led off with a single before Villanueva plated her with a RBI-double. Dabbadie then reach on an error to put runners on the corners. Castro followed with another one-run base knock to make it 3-2.
Medaille tied it up at 3-3 in the top of the third before taking the lead following a three-run top of the fourth. The next two half innings were scoreless before NJCU made a charge in the bottom of the fifth. Castro led off with a single and then stole second before Rosales brough her home with a one-run single — Rosales made it over to second on a subsequent wild pitch. Mariah Villanueva (Jersey City, N.J./McNair Academic) managed a sky-high pop fly that was caught in shallow right by the Mavericks' second base and Roselas actually scored on what turned out to be a sacrifice fly, making it 6-5. Medaille scored two more in the top of the seventh to close it out.

Mya Villanueva (Jersey City, N.J./McNair Academic) was 2-for-3 with two doubles, two runs, a RBI and was hit by a pitch.
- Castro was 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, a run and a RBI. Barrios was also 2-for-4.
- Dabbadie entered the circle in the fifth after starting at DP and tossed 3.0 innings with five strikeouts and allowed just one earned.
