Baseball Unable to Hold Early Lead in 12-5 Loss at #RV St. Joe's-L.I.

Gothic Knights Out-Hit Golden Eagles in Defeat

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. — The New Jersey City University traveled out to Long Island on Tuesday evening, April 11, for a non-conference road game against #RV St. Joseph's University-Long Island. The Gothic Knights outhit the Golden Eagles, 12-9, and held a 3-0 lead early on in the contest, but unfortunately fell to St. Joe's-L.I. by a final of 12-5. Five different NJCU players had multi-hit days in the loss.

NJCU (10-15) led off the top of the first against St. Joes (17-3) with a junior third baseman Garrett Allo (Monroe, N.J./East Brunswick Tech) single. Graduate student Ricky Voss (Eatontown, N.J./Monmouth Regional), who saw time in center and at first today, followed with a double to right to put two in scoring position. Senior leftfielder Jimmy Vizzoni (Hamilton, N.J./Trenton Catholic) followed with a sac fly to center to plate Allo for the first run of the game before senior rightfielder Josh Hernandez (Lake Worth, Fla./Park Vista Community) plated Voss next with a RBI single to make it 2-0. The next three half innings went scoreless before Jersey City scored another to go up 3-0 in the top of the third. Allo again led off with a single, followed by a base hit from Voss. With one out, Hernandez hit a sac fly to right to score Allo. NJCU nearly made it 4-0, but Voss was thrown out at home to end the inning.

The Golden Eagles eventually took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the third and then built on the to go up 8-3 heading into the seventh. With one out, junior Ali Pompey (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic) reached on a pinch hit double to right before senior Bryan Fernandez (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville War Memorial), who came in to catch in the latter stages of tonight's game, hit a RBI single to left to cut it to 8-4. St. Joe's, however, scored four more over the next two innings to make it 12-4. NJCU got one back in the top of the ninth to close out the game's scoring. Junior Justin Moreno (Brooklyn, N.Y./Trenton Catholic), who entered to play shortstop in the bottom of the seventh, led off the ninth with a one-out triple to center before Fernandez collected his second RBI of the contest with a single to left.

Highlights:
- Allo was 2-for-5 with two runs in the leadoff spot. He is currently riding a 22-game on-base streak and his brought his average up to a season-best .354 and is second on the team with a .454 on-base percentage.
- Voss was 2-for-4 with a double, a walk, a stolen base and a run scored. He leads NJCU with an outstanding .447 average and is tops on the squad with a .533 on-base percentage. Voss is currently tied for third in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) in batting average. He is riding a 16-game on-base streak.
- Hernandez was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a sac fly in the clean-up spot. Freshman second baseman Dom Yarson (Ewing, N.J./Ewing) was also 2-for-3 and was hit by a pitch.
- Fernandez was 2-for-2 with two RBI.

Jersey City returns to action on Thursday and Friday, April 13-14, for a home-and-home series with #RV Montclair State University. The Gothic Knights first welcome the Red Hawks to the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex on Thursday for one at 3:30 p.m. before traveling to Montclair, N.J., for a 3:30 p.m. road contest on Friday.
