Softball Comes up Short in a Pair at William Paterson

WAYNE, N.J. — The New Jersey City University softball team played a pair of road New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) games at William Paterson University on Tuesday, April 11. The Gothic Knights dropped game one, a 1-0 pitchers' dual, to the Pioneers before WPU came out on top in game two, 11-1 in five innings.

Jersey City (9-13, 1-7 NJAC) got yet another gem in the pitching circle in game one from junior righthander Sidnie Dabbadie (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs). The co-captain limited William Paterson (16-5-1, 2-4-1 NJAC) to just four hits and one earned run over 6.0 innings of work, striking out three batters during her day's work. The Gothic Knights got something going in the top of the second as Dabbadie herself led off with a single. She was then sacrificed over to second before the Pioneers turned a hard-hit line drive off the bat of sophomore third base Mya Villanueva (Jersey City, N.J./McNair Academic) into a double play at short to end the inning.

Dabbadie got into a jam in the bottom of the fourth as the Pioneers loaded the bases with just one out. Fortunately, the junior from Cali got the next to batters with a strikeout and a pop up to escape with the game still scoreless. However, WPU managed to score the lone run of the game in the bottom of the fifth via a two-out double do the line in left. The top of the sixth saw the Green and Gold make a bid to tie the game up. Freshman leftfielder Natalie Rosales (Union City, N.J./Jose Marti STEM Academy) led off with a one-out single up the middle and then junior shortstop Emily Tunney (Mays Landing, N.J./Oak Crest) did the same two at-bats later to put two runners on. The pair advanced into scoring position next via a wild pitch, but NJCU was unable to capitalize on its last scoring opportunity of game one.

The Pioneers then topped the Gothic Knights, 11-1, in game two to close out the doubleheader. Dabbadie and Tunney both went 2-for-5 over the two games today, while the former also scored a run.

Up Next:
Jersey City returns to action on Thursday afternoon, April 13, in Hackettstown, N.J., for a road non-conference doubleheader at Centenary University. The Gothic Knights and Cyclones face off for the first time since April 4, 2019, with game one first pitch scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
