HOBOKEN, N.J. — After convincingly winning two of three doubles match on Sunday, April 16, against Hudson County rival Stevens Institute of Technology, the New Jersey City University women's tennis team played in four different three-set singles matches en route to a shorthanded 6-3 victory over the Ducks on the road.
Unable to field players at third doubles or sixth singles due to injury, and thus defaulting in both those matches, the Gothic Knights (9-5) hunkered down and fought through it and picked up that hard-earned victory over Stevens (7-6). Seniors
Eliza Clamor (Auckland, New Zealand/Rangitoto College) and
Giada Zorzan (Milan, Italy/Liceo dello Sport Marco Pantani) started off with a strong, 8-1, win at first doubles. Sophomore
Vanshita Malhotra (Barwala, India/DAV Model School) and freshman
Sophia Jurina (Munich, Germany/Carl-Spitzweg-Gymnasium) followed suit at second doubles, winning 8-3, to tie it up at 2-2 heading into singles.
Sophomore
Sara Zorzan (Milan, Italy/Liceo Falcone Borsellino) had it the easiest, winning her match at fifth singles, 6-2, 6-1. However, all four of the remaining matches went three sets. The Ducks won at third singles, but Jersey City took first singles via a strong comeback by
Giada Zorzan (Milan, Italy/Liceo dello Sport Marco Pantani) (2-6, 6-4, 7-6(2)). Clamor won second singles, as well (6-3, 3-6, 6-4) and Jurina won her match after being down a set at fourth singles (3-6, 6-3, 6-0).
