UNION, N.J. — The New Jersey City University baseball team faced off with New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) foe Kean University on the road on Thursday, April 20. NJCU managed 12 hits to the Cougars 16, but was unable to pull out the win in the 14-3 loss. Graduate student
Ricky Voss (Eatontown, N.J./Monmouth Regional) drilled his fourth home run of the season and extended his already-program-record total to 21. Junior third baseman
Garrett Allo (Monroe, N.J./East Brunswick Tech) was 1-for-5 at the plate to extend his on-base streak to 28 straight games.
The Gothic Knights (11-20, 1-10 NJAC) saw six pitchers on the mound today, but were unable to quiet the Cougars (20-11-1, 9-1-1 NJAC) bats on the afternoon. Senior right-hander
Paul Tannucilli (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) did toss 1.1 scoreless innings in relief. Offensively, senior rightfieder
Josh Hernandez (Lake Worth, Fla./Park Vista Community) was 2-for-4 with a RBI, while freshman second baseman
Dom Yarson (Ewing, N.J./Ewing) and sophomore designated hitter
John Abrahamsen (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township) were also 2-for-4, with the latter scoring a run, as well. Rookie shortstop
Arian Lunar (Elizabeth, N.J./Elizabeth) was 2-for-3 on the day too.
Trailing 4-0 in the top of the third, NJCU had a chance to make some magic as Allo led off with a one-out single. He advanced to second on a wild pitch and then Voss walked. The pair then moved over to second and third on another wild pitch, but senior leftfielder
Jimmy Vizzoni (Hamilton, N.J./Trenton Catholic) lined into an unfortunate double-play at second and Voss was also tagged out to end the inning.
Jersey City's first offense came in the top of the sixth as Voss blasted a solo home run to right with one out. The squad scored another run in the top of the seventh as Abrahamsen led off with a single. Then, three at-bats later, Lunar singled, but picked up two extra bases on an error in centerfield, which allowed Abrahamsen to score.
NJCU then plated one more in the top of the eighth. Voss led off with a double to center before Hernandez singled him home two batters late. The Gothic Knights had a chance to continue that momentum as Yarson followed with a single and then another one from Abrahamsen to load the bases. Unfortunately, a ground-ball double play ended the inning.
