Men's Tennis' NJAC Run Halted by TCNJ

Gothic Knights Fall Short, 7-2, at Lions in East Division Championship Battle

EWING, N.J. — For the third consecutive season, the final match of New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) men's East Division regular-season play featured New Jersey City University and The College of New Jersey. The Gothic Knights traveled down to the Lions on Sunday, April 23, for the de facto NJAC East Division Championship match, but unfortunately fell to now-two-time defending winners TCNJ, 7-2.

Doubles play was extremely tight to start things off for the Gothic Knights (10-7, 3-1 NJAC) and Lions (11-3, 4-0 NJAC). TCNJ took the early 1-0 lead after sweeping third doubles and then went up 2-0 after a tight, 8-5 win a first doubles. NJCU saw the pair of sophomore Joaquin Pluis (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Santa Felicitas) and junior Jordi Julia (Barcelona, Spain/IES Sant Quirze del Valles) earn a hard-fought victory at second doubles, 8-7(2) to make it 2-1 heading into singles play.

The Lions then won third singles, sixth singles and fifth singles to lock up their second straight East Division title. However, the most anticipated match of the day was at #1 singles as NJCU's junior captain Nico Teynie (Rouen, France/Lycée Val de Seine) — ranked #24 in the Northeast Region — took on Matt Michibata of TCNJ — ranked #14 in the region. The two were pretty evenly matched, but Michibata edged out Teynie, 6-4, 6-4. Second singles was close, as well, as junior Alejandro Ley (Las Palmas, Spain/I.E.S. Politécnico) traded sets with Adrian Tsui to force a 10-point third-set tiebreak, but ultimately fell (6-2, 2-6, 10-6). The last match to finish on the afternoon went to the Gothic Knights as rookie Pedro Caro-Accino Roca (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain/British School of Gran Canaria) won fourth singles in a three-set match, as well (2-6, 6-3, 10-8).
