Gothic Knights in Search of Third-Straight Winning Season

July 17, 2023

JERSEY CITY, N.J. — The New Jersey City University women's volleyball team, led by third-year head coach Jordan Robinson, has released its 2023 schedule as the Gothic Knights aim to finish over the .500 mark for the third straight season. NJCU finished last season strong and just missed out an a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) bid and hopes are now high for the upcoming season.

2022 Season in Review:
The Gothic Knights finished 2022 with a 17-12 overall record, the most wins for the program since all the way back in 2007 when Jersey City claimed the NJAC Regular-Season Championship. Additionally, the squad finished 3-5 in conference play, its best NJAC record since 2008 when the program went 5-3, and just missed out on the conference tournament via a tiebreaker in the final standings.

NJCU secured its first bid to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Championship since 2016 and, after a quarterfinal five-set thrilling win, finished the year as ECAC semifinalists — the team hosted the entire tournament at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center (JMAC). Last but not least, Jersey City landed two players on the All-NJAC squad, including Second Team honoree Paola Toledo (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/Colegio Catolico San Rafael); the highest All-Conference selection for the program since 2009.

Looking Forward to 2023:
Jersey City is back in action over Labor Day weekend as the squad opens the season with a trio of matches at the JMAC. First, it will be a tri-match against Alvernia University and Hunter College (Sept. 1), before NJCU takes on the Golden Wolves once again for a standalone contest the following day. Home play continues five days later against the City College of New York (Sept. 7). NJAC play begins as Rutgers-Newark comes to the JMAC (Sept. 19) before the eight-match homestand to open 2023 concludes with a tri-match against Bryn Athyn College and Immaculata University (Sept. 23). Conference play resumes at Kean University (Sept. 26) and continues back in Jersey City against Stockton University (Sept. 28) and then in South Jersey at Rutgers-Camden (Oct. 3). Four days later, the Gothic Knights remain on the road for a tri-match in D.C. at Catholic University, where they will also take on Dickinson College (Oct. 7).

Montclair State University then meets the Green and Gold back at the JMAC for NJAC play (Oct. 10), followed by a home non-conference match against Widener University (Oct. 12). That weekend then sees NJCU travel to Misericordia University for another non-conference tri-match, also featuring Messiah University (Oct. 14). Ramapo College is the next destination (Oct. 17) for another road NJAC match before the squad returns home to host Pratt Institute (Oct. 18).  A quick road match at John Jay College (Oct. 19) is followed by a home one against Delaware Valley University (Oct. 21). NJCU closes out home regular-season play for the year against NJAC foe Rowan University (Oct. 24). On the road, the Gothic Knights first head over to Brooklyn College (Oct. 26) before going out to Lancaster Bible College for a tri-match, also featuring Bard College (Oct. 28). Regular-season and NJAC play then comes to a close on the road at William Paterson University (Oct. 31). The 2023 NJAC Tournament is scheduled for Nov. 7-11.

Hear from Head Coach Jordan Robinson:
"The coaching staff is excited for the start of the 2023 season and building upon last season's success, led by three seniors that helped put the program back on the radar within Division III women's volleyball," said Robinson. "The squad is looking to continue its growth with the addition of four freshmen and two transfers to round out this season's roster."

"This year's schedule is balanced with some very solid out-of-conference matches against historically tough schools such as Messiah, Hunter, Catholic and others, which will help prepare us for an always-tough conference campaign. As always, the goal is to make the NJAC Tournament with the ultimate goal of a championship in mind."
