JERSEY CITY, N.J. — The New Jersey City University women's volleyball team fell to Rutgers-Newark, 3-1 (23-25, 25-19, 25-15, 25-23), on Tuesday night, Sept. 19, on Coach Charlie Brown Court at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center.
The Gothic Knights (1-4, 0-1 NJAC) were led in kills by junior
Brenda Gonzalez (Union City, N.J., Dickinson) with eight and in aces by senior
Katrina Nguyendon (Union, N.J., Union) with five. Nguyendon
also led the Gothic Knights in digs with 15, tied for match-best with sophomore
Kiki Lugo (Kearny, N.J., Kearny).
The Green and Gold were able to take the first set from the Scarlet Raiders (5-2, 1-0 NJAC), which ended up being the set of night. Down 15-13, Nguyendon hit three of her five aces during a 6-0 run to take the biggest lead of the set. The Scarlet Raiders would orchestrate their own 5-2 run to even the set at 21. Marina Millett (Matawan, N.J., Saint John Vianney) and a couple of Scarlet Raider mistakes helped NJCU take the 1-0 lead and give the squad its fourth consecutive victorious set.
The second set was a back and forth battle, but the Scarlet Raiders would go on a 7-0 run to win it and tie the match. In set three, Rutgers-Newark held the Gothic Knights to 15 points in to take a 2-1 lead in the match. NJCU jumped out to an 8-2 lead to begin set four and had early eyes on a fifth. Rutgers-Newark stayed within reach, though, and was able to keep the score within three at 19-13. Similar to set two, the Scarlet Raiders went on another 7-0 run to reclaim the lead. The end of the set was back and forth, but the Gothic Knights would fall 25-23.
