The New Jersey City University men's soccer team played an extremely tight contest on the road Saturday, Oct. 1, against New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opponent Rutgers-Camden. The Gothic Knights out-shot the Scarlet Raptors 5-3 in on-target attempts and applied tons of pressure against their opponents, however the home team defeated the Green and Gold 1-0 off a goal that came just inside of the 70 minute of play.
The Gothic Knights (4-4-2, 0-2 NJAC) had most of the chances throughout the first half against the Scarlet Raptors (8-2-1, 3-0 NJAC). Junior
Danny Tobon (Clifton, N.J., Clifton) took his first and only shot of the match in the fifth minute, which was saved wide. Just a few minutes later, junior midfielder
Ryan Evande (Hackensack, N.J., Hackensack) also tried to get the Green and Gold on the board, but his header was saved by the Scarlet Raptors keeper.
Senior
Maximo Vargas' (Montevideo, Uruguay, The British Schools) only opportunity would come in the 12', and he too would have his header saved. Evande had another chance to break the deadlock in the 22', but again the Rutgers-Camden keeper kept the Gothic Knights from scoring. Substitute
Gabe Cruz (Colonia, N.J., Colonia) recorded the last on-target attempt for the Green and Gold on the cusp of halftime, but NJCU was unable to beat the Rutgers-Camden defense.
The Gothic Knights couldn't register an attempt on target in the second half despite generating good opportunities. The scoring opened in the 68' when the Scarlet Raptors worked the ball up from their own defensive third and got a chip shot over the Gothic Knights defense for the game's only goal.
