JERSEY CITY, N.J. — The New Jersey City University men's basketball team, led by the longest-tenured active head coach in the Gothic Knights' athletic department, 17th-year head coach
Marc Brown, has released its 2023-24 season schedule. Coach Brown's squad is looking to make its 14th consecutive postseason berth, which would be the 16th under his guidance of the program.
2022-23 Season in Review:
There were plenty of highs for the Gothic Knights last season as the team finished the regular-season in sixth place in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) standings, locking in the program's 13th straight trip to the postseason. That was partly earned by a strong finish to the regular-season, which saw NJCU win three of its last four games. That included possibly the highest of highs, a 73-71 upset buzzer-beating victory at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center (JMAC) on Coach Charlie Brown Court over then-#23 Rowan University on Feb. 8, 2023. The back-to-back threes with time winding down and the subsequent play-by-play call on
GothicVision resulted in widespread national and viral media attention, as well as 10s of millions of impressions, including
#1 on ESPN's SportsCenter's Top 10 Plays, as well as Scott Van Pelt's Best Things I Saw segment during ESPN's SportsCenter at night, Barstool Sports and so much more.
Looking Forward to 2023-24:
The Green and Gold return to the hardwood for their regular-season opener on the road at Brooklyn College (Nov. 11), followed by the annual Battle of Hudson County with a trip to Hoboken for a matchup with Stevens Institute of Technology (Nov. 15). Home play for 2023-24 on Charlie Brown Court begins against Misericordia University (Nov. 18) before NJAC play kicks off on the road at Montclair State University (Nov. 21). A brief road non-conference tilt at Farmingdale State College (Nov. 27) is then followed by the conference home-opener against William Paterson University (Nov. 29) to close out the first month of action.
December begins with two straight road NJAC games at The College of New Jersey (Dec. 2) and Ramapo College (Dec. 6) before the Gothic Knights return to the JMAC for three in a row prior to winter break. First, conference rivals Kean University (Dec. 9) and Rowan (Dec. 13) come to the West Side and then non-conference foe Saint Elizabeth University (Dec. 16) comes to Charlie Brown Court for the first-ever meeting between the two programs. NJCU returns from break for two games as part of the Christopher Newport University/Holiday Inn Invitational. The Gothic Knights will face Stevenson University (Dec. 28) in the first round — also a first-time match-up — and will play again the next day in either the consolation or championship game.
The New Year begins with a road tilt at rival Rutgers-Newark (Jan. 6) before action resumes at the JMAC against Rutgers-Camden (Jan. 10). The Gothic Knights travel down to Stockton University (Jan. 13) next before returning home for two straight against Montclair State (Jan. 17) and TCNJ (Jan. 20). NJCU follows up with two road NJAC games at William Paterson (Jan. 24) and Kean (Jan. 27). The month closes with a return to Charlie Brown Court against Ramapo (Jan. 31) before another home game against Rutgers-Newark (Feb. 3). A road trip to Rowan (Feb. 7) is followed by Senior Day at the JMAC against Stockton (Feb. 10) before the regular-season closes on the road at Rutgers-Camden (Feb. 14). The 2024 NJAC Tournament is scheduled for Feb. 17-24 and the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship takes place from March 1-16.
Hear from Head Coach March Brown:
"After evaluating last season, we made a change to the coaching staff and made major changes to the roster," said Brown. "We played very well during the Harry James College League, going undefeated with the final victory coming against the County College of Morris to win the championship. We return seven players from last year's roster and our new additions are a combination of transfers and incoming freshman. We will once again play a very competitive schedule, highlighted by a trip to Newport News for the Holiday Classic, hosted by 2023 National Champion Christopher Newport."
"As always, we will be challenged nightly in the NJAC," continued Brown. "We will lean heavily on returners
Will Brown III (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic),
Avante Gilbert (Paterson, N.J./International) and
Ryan Savoy (Lakewood, N.J./Lakewood). We will also look for contributions from young returners,
Bakhi Rogers-Robinson (Orange, N.J./West Caldwell Tech) and
Branden Moore (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck). Newcomers who should have an immediate impact include Danny Rodriguez, a transfer form Division I Fairleigh Dickinson University and Brenden Kelly, a transfer from Division I East Carolina University.
Hakeem Wilson also returns to the program after a year away. Freshmen
Marc Brown Jr. and Julian Caldejon will also be expected to contribute immediately. Chemistry will be the key to success, especially early in the season. With the added pieces, we expect our depth to play a major role."
Fans can attend all NJCU men's basketball home games at the JMAC. All Gothic Knights home games will also be streamed live on GothicVision, which can be found at www.NJCUGothicKnights.com/GothicVision or via the GothicVision app, available in both the iOS app store and on Android, as well as Roku.
