JERSEY CITY, N.J. — The New Jersey City University women's basketball team hosted its second straight home game on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 20, at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center (JMAC). The Gothic Knights hosted the Lions of The College of New Jersey in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game where both teams entered 7-3 in conference play. The Lions left Jersey City victorious after hitting a game-winning three at the buzzer, winning 69-68.
Jersey City (9-7, 7-4 NJAC) traded leads with the Lions (11-7, 8-3 NJAC) for most of the first quarter, before TCNJ hit back-to-back threes to close out the first quarter and took a six point lead. Junior forward Kenya Wager cut into the deficit by converting a three-point play, then a few possessions later got another layup to go. TCNJ extended its lead to as many as 12 points, but senior All-American point guard
Damaris Rodriguez (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) got it back to single digits with 0:43 remaining. At the half, the Gothic Knights trailed 34-25.
Rodriguez opened the second half with a short jumper and freshman guard
Na'tori Postell (Passaic, N.J./Passaic Arts & Science Charter) layed in a pass from Rodriguez to bring the Lions lead down to five. However, TCNJ came right back and built its lead back up to double figures into the fourth quarter.
Senior forward
Dayjah Anderson (East Orange, NJ/Newark Tech) helped keep the Gothic Knights afloat with back-to-back buckets in the paint and the momentum began to shift in NJCU's favor. After an Anderson block, Postell hit a three to cut the Lions lead back down to six points. Both teams traded field goals until Postell hit two straight three-pointers and tied the game up at 63 with 2:17 remaining. With 1:20 to go, Postell hit another from behind the arc to tie the game again. NJCU and TCNJ remained tied until junior guard
Alaisha Mumford (Jersey City, N.J./Lincoln) was fouled with 0:03 remaining. The Gothic Knights were in the bonus and Mumford sunk both from the line. After the second make, the Lions got the ball up the court quickly and got off a three, which went through the net right as the buzzer sounded, giving TCNJ the victory.
Highlights;
- Postell set a new career-high in points (18) and scored 11 of those 18 in the fourth quarter.
- Mumford recorded her first career double-double, including a career-high in rebounds (13).
