CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — The New Jersey City University women's wrestling team, tied for #9 nationally in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) NCAA Women's Rankings, competed in day one of the renowned NWCA/USMC National Duals on Friday, Jan. 5, at the UNI Dome on the campus of the University of Northern Iowa. NJCU competed in three duals on the day, including two against top-13 ranked opponents. Despite three team defeats, the Gothic Knight standouts of #6-ranked junior
Izabella Frezzo (East Rutherford, N.J./Becton Regional) and #3-ranked senior captain
Sandy Guerrero (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) each posted perfect 3-0 records.
NJCU (3-11) began against #13-ranked Presbyterian College and was defeated, 37-8. Frezzo began her dominant day at 116 pounds with a 6-0 decision of Charlize Shular of the Blue Hose, while Guerrero took down her foe at 191 pounds via a 10-0 technical fall. Then, in the touch 40-9 loss to Adrian College, Frezzo picked up a 13-2 technical fall over Sophia Renteria of the Bulldogs. Guerrero took just 17 seconds to pin her opponent, Xsaria Puente. In the Green and Gold's final match of the day, a 37-9 loss to #12 Aurora University, Frezzo secured a win by fall over Sharon Moreno in just 48 seconds, while Guerrero defeated Sydney Manos via a 10-2 decision.

Frezzo is now19-2 on the season with nine wins by fall and six technical falls, while Guerrero is 20-1, including five pins and seven technical falls. The NJCU pair, along with the rest of their teammates in Iowa, will be back in action tomorrow morning, Saturday, Jan. 6, at 10:00 a.m. ET to take on #11-ranked Gannon University.
