NEWARK, N.J. – A pair of late goals by the Gothic Knights lifted them past New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) rivals, Rutgers-Newark, 2-1.
NJCU (6-4-6, 2-4-2) out shot the Scarlet Raiders (5-9-3, 1-6-1) 12 to six. Gineth Arias Martinez (Soacha Cundinamarca, Colombia/Institución Educativa Leon XII) paced the team with four shots while Sophia Mannino (Burlington, N.J./Burlington Township) made three saves. Maria Castillo led the way for the Scarlet Raiders with two shots.
The Scarlet Raiders opened the scoring on their home turf with a goal in the 37th minute. Castillo ripped a shot at Mannino that was originally saved but fell right back to the foot of Castillo who poked it into the back of the net. After the goal, the defense led the way as both teams failed to record a shot for the final 10 minutes.
In the second half, the offense came alive for the Gothic Knights as they tallied three shots in the first 9 minutes. The volley of shots finally paid dividends in the 68th minute when Arias Martinez took a pass from Amanda Papamanolis (Hamilton, N.J./Steinert) and beat Angela Amaya to knot the game up at one. The Gothic Knights made their shots count as time fizzled away as Nyrohah Alvarenga (North Bergen, N.J./High Tech) powered a shot past Amaya for, what would be, the game-winning goal with 9 minutes left. With the lead in hand and just 9 minutes remaining, the Gothic Knights fortified their defensive unit and only allowed one shot by the Scarlet Raiders to secure a critical three points.
