MONTCLAIR, N.J - The Gothic Knights women's volleyball team fell to New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opponents, Montclair State University, 3-0 (25-10, 28-26, 25-11) on Wednesday, Oct. 3.
The Red Hawks (10-6, 2-1) hit .227 as a team and tallied 42 kills with a set high of 15 in the second stanza. NJCU (8-9, 1-2) was held to .051 hitting as they dropped their second straight conference match.
Brenda Gonzalez (Union City, N.J./Dickinson) paced the Gothic Knights with 14 kills while
Keyanni Overstreet (Port Arthur, Texas/Sabine Pass) collected a team-high 21 assists. Defensively,
Carly Everett (York, Pa./York Catholic) kept rallies alive to the tune of 18 digs.
Montclair State quickly jumped out to a 13-1 lead behind a strong start from Sarah Capone and Rachel Curran. The Gothic Knights found themselves in a deep hole late in the set and strung four points together with kills by Gonzalez and
Kiki Lugo (Kearny, N.J./Kearny). Unfortunately for the Gothic Knights, the Red Hawks ended the rally with three points to close out the set.
The Gothic Knights rebounded well in the second set, pushing the set to extra points. Everett gave NJCU a 4-3 lead early with a service ace that was aided by a Gonzalez kill to keep the Gothic Knights ahead. With the set knotted at 10, NJCU used a 3-0 run highlighted by a
Taylor Riccio (Nutley, N.J./Paramus Catholic) kill. The Red Hawks grabbed hold of the lead late, 21-20, behind a 4-0 run, however, Gonzalez eventually tied the set up at 24. After a service error tied the set again, Montclair scored two straight to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
NJCU found themselves down early in the third set but powered back and cut the lead down to three, 11-8. Montclair ballooned its lead out to five before using an 11-1 run to win the match.
