Preview: No. 5 Women's Soccer Prepares for No. 4 Stockton in NJAC Tournament

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The No. 5 New Jersey City University (NJCU) women's soccer team will face off against No. 4 Stockton on Saturday in Galloway, N.J., in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Tournament quarterfinals. The game is set for 4:00 p.m. and can be streamed live on Stockton University's YouTube channel - @StocktonAthletics.

The Gothic Knights punched their ticket for its second consecutive season, finishing 6-4-7 overall and 2-4-3 in the NJAC. The Ospreys enter the tournament with an overall record of 10-6-2 and 5-3-1 in the NJAC, making the tournament every year since 2002. Last season, NJCU suffered a loss to No. 1 Rowan in the semifinals, while Stockton fell in the first round to No. 3 Montclair State in overtime.

The Gothic Knights are 0-2 all-time against Stockton in the NJAC Tournament, last matching up in 2011 and falling 5-2. The Ospreys lead the all-time series (since 1993) against the Green and Gold, 0-30-1. On Oct. 14, 2023, the Gothic Knights secured their first tie in history against Stockton, 1-1. Neither squad has won the NJAC tournament since 1993.

Leading the Gothic Knights offensive attack is fifth-year forward Kim Brites (Carteret, N.J./Carteret), who enters Saturday ranked fifth in the NJAC in goals scored (eight) and sixth in points (19). Junior Nyrohah Alvarenga (North Bergen, N.J./High Tech) joins Brites with five goals and three assists for 13 points. Manning the goal, is junior keeper Sophia Mannino (Burlington, N.J./Burlington Township), who collected eight saves in the scoreless draw with William Paterson this past Wednesday. The Burlington, N.J. native, ranks fifth in the conference in saves per game (4.40), sixth in goals-against average (1.230), seventh in saves (.795), and eighth in shutouts (4).

The Ospreys are led by junior Logan Shaw, who stands at 19 points, fifth in the conference. She has scored eight times, including three game-winning goals. The Hainesport, N.J. native, averages 2.67 shots per game and 1.73 on target. By her side are senior Erica Dietz and sophomore Kylee Reissek, who have combined for 20 points thus far, posting eight goals and four assists. Junior goalkeeper Morgan Keil records a .843 goals-against average, and a .825 save percentage, ranked fourth in the NJAC. She has tallied five shutouts this season and averages four saves per game.

The winner of this game moves on to the semifinals against No. 1 seed TCNJ on Wednesday, Nov. 6. The sixth-seeded Cougars of Kean are heading to No. 3 Montclair State on Saturday, Nov. 2 for the other quarterfinals matchup, winner of that contest heads to No. 2 Rowan next Wednesday.
