JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Brenda Gonzalez (Union City, N.J./Dickinson) paced the Gothic Knights on senior night with 20 kills as NJCU toppled Lehman College, 3-0 (25-17, 25-11, 25-21) in straight sets on Friday, November 1 at the John J. Moore Athletics & Fitness Center.
NJCU (11-14) hit a robust .326 as a team while holding Lehman (6-13) to .167 hitting. Gonzalez hit .333 in the match and tallied one ace and five digs to go with her 20 kills. Keyanni Overstreet (Port Arthur, Texas/Sabine Pass) recorded 27 assists and two service aces while Elisabeth Brito (Jersey City, N.J./Union City) led the team with 10 digs.
The Gothic Knights jumped out to a 5-2 lead behind kills from Jaelyn Martinez (Lakewood, Fla./Lake Gibson), Marina Millet, and Gonzalez. The Lightning stormed back and took a 9-8 lead before the Gothic Knights used a 7-2 run sparked by an ace by Overstreet to jump into the driver's seat. Brianna Melanson (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick) extended the lead with a kill, putting NJCU ahead 17-13. With the lead in hand, the Gothic Knights held the Lightning at arm's length as they took a 1-0 lead in the match.
A quick start to the second game set the tone as NJCU took a 10-5 lead early on thanks to back-to-back kills by Gonzalez. The Gothic Knights continued to string points together and eventually saw their lead balloon out to 19-9. An error by the Gothic Knights broke their run of points but only briefly as they finished the set on a 6-1 run.
In the closest battle of the night, the Lightning took an 8-3 lead before NJCU responded with a run of their own thanks to errors by the Lightning. Gonzalez gave the Gothic Knights their first lead of the set, 11-10, off of a pass from Brito. Lehman took a slight lead before the set was knotted at 18. With a one-point lead, the Gothic Knights closed out the set on a 6-2 run to complete the sweep on senior night.
