GALLOWAY, N.J. – The New Jersey City University (NJCU) women's volleyball team was eliminated from the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Tournament after a 3-0 loss to No. 3 Stockton University in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, Nov. 12, at the Sports Center.
Stockton led the match, winning 25-16, 25-10, and 25-14, outscoring the Gothic Knights in nearly every statistical category. The Ospreys tallied 37 kills to NJCU's 20, recorded 12 service aces to NJCU's two, and accumulated seven blocks compared to NJCU's three. Stockton also led in assists (36-19) and digs (37-25).
The Ospreys hit an impressive .316, while NJCU struggled with a hitting percentage of just .024.
Senior outside hitter
Brenda Gonzalez (Union City, N.J./Dickinson) led NJCU with nine kills, four digs, and a pair of service aces. Freshman setter
Keyanni Overstreet (Port Arthur, Texas/Sabine Pass) contributed 17 assists and four digs, while sophomore libero
Carly Everett (York, Pa./York Catholic) recorded a team-high 10 digs.
The Gothic Knights came out strong in the first set, grabbing an early 6-2 lead. However, a series of Stockton kills and NJCU errors saw the Ospreys take control, eventually winning the set 25-16. Gonzalez, along with juniors
Kiki Lugo (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) and Marina Millet, combined for six kills in the set.
In the second set, NJCU stayed close early at 6-5, but a 19-5 run from Stockton ended any hopes of a comeback, with the Ospreys claiming the set 25-10. Gonzalez led NJCU with three kills, and Lugo added two.
The third set saw the Gothic Knights fight back after falling behind 4-1, with Gonzalez adding two kills to make it 4-3. However, Stockton quickly regained control and secured the final set 25-14 to complete the sweep.
With the victory, Stockton advances to the NJAC semifinals, where they will face Montclair State on Thursday, Nov. 14, at 7:00 p.m.
