MORRISTOWN, N.J. - Isaiah Johnson-Williams (Jersey City, N.J./Don Bosco) paced the Gothic Knights with 15 points as NJCU defeated Saint Elizabeth 89-71 in non-conference action on Wednesday night.
NJCU (2-0) shot 44.1% from the floor and a scorching 50% from three-point range. SEU (0-2) was held to 42.1% from the field and 29% from behind the arc. Jaheim Lewis (Hillside, N.J./Hillside) added 13 points while Avante Gilbert (Paterson, N.J./International) scored 11 points with a team-high six rebounds.
The Gothic Knights started the game on a 9-0 run behind five points from Lewis. The Eagles tallied their first points of the game at the 16:43 mark, however, NJCU's suffocating defense prevented another point until there was 9:52 remaining on the clock. At that point, NJCU ballooned its lead to 27-4. Saint Elizabeth's offense began to find its stride but NJCU remained a formidable opponent, holding onto its 20-point lead into the break.
Saint Elizabeth nearly matched NJCU's 50-point total from the first half with 47 points in the second stanza. Throughout the second half, the Eagles continued to chip away at the deficit, however, the Gothic Knights did well to keep them from mounting a strong comeback. Saint Elizabeth cut the lead down to 16 with seven minutes to go, but baskets by Brenden Kelly (Clark, N.J./Elizabeth) and Hakeem Wilson (Newark, N.J./North Star Academy) quickly pushed NJCU's back into the 20s. With the lead firmly in hand, the Gothic Knights held onto the lead to remain undefeated on the young season.
