NJCU Men's Basketball Opens NJAC Play with 60-56 Victory Over Ramapo

Lewis Contributes a Season-High 19 Points Against the Roadrunners

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The New Jersey City University (NJCU) men's basketball team began their NJAC season with a hard-fought 60-56 victory over Ramapo on Tuesday, Nov. 26, at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center. The Gothic Knights improve to 4-2 on the season, with a 1-0 mark in NJAC play, while Ramapo falls to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

NJCU shot 37.7% (23-61) from the field, 33.3% (5-15) from three-point range, and 64.3% (9-14) from the free-throw line. In contrast, Ramapo posted a shooting percentage of 40.4% (23-57) from the field, but struggled from beyond the arc, hitting just 9.1% (1-11) of their three-pointers. The Roadrunners were also 60% (9-15) from the free-throw line.

The Gothic Knights outscored Ramapo in several categories, including second-chance points (15-10), bench points (19-17), and fast-break points (10-9). However, Ramapo held a slight edge in points off turnovers (16-12) and points in the paint (34-20).
Senior guard Jaheim Lewis (Hillside, N.J./Hillside) led NJCU with a season-high 19 points on 6-of-12 shooting, including 2-of-3 from three-point range. Lewis also contributed nine rebounds. Fifth-year forward Avante Gilbert (Paterson, N.J./International) added 13 points and four rebounds, while junior guard Bakhi Rogers-Robinson (Orange, N.J./West Caldwell Tech) recorded 10 points, five rebounds, and two steals.

For Ramapo, Peter Gorman led the way with 13 points and seven rebounds, adding two steals and one block.

The game was a close contest throughout. With about nine minutes left in the first half, Ramapo held their largest lead of the game at 17-11. However, NJCU mounted a comeback with key jumpers from Rogers-Robinson to close the gap. The two teams went into halftime tied at 27.

In the second half, NJCU pulled ahead as five players contributed to a 6-point lead, 37-31. The Gothic Knights extended their advantage to nine points with 13:45 remaining, including four points from junior center Raymond Ezike (Newark, N.J./Westside) and a three-pointer from senior forward Isaiah Johnson-Williams (Jersey City, N.J./Don Bosco). NJCU's largest lead was 10 points at the 10:11 mark.

Ramapo responded with a 9-2 run to cut the deficit to just three points with under eight minutes left. However, NJCU countered with a 7-2 run, with Rogers-Robinson scoring four of the points. In the final minute, Ramapo made it a one-possession game after a 6-0 run, with Jordan Myers contributing four points. But a foul by Ramapo with one second remaining sealed the victory for NJCU, giving them a two-possession lead and a 60-56 win.
