Women's Basketball Defeats Ramapo, 55-42, in NJAC Season Opener

JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The New Jersey City University women's basketball team outlasted Ramapo College, 55-42,  in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) season opener on Tuesday, November 26 at the John J. Moore Athletics & Fitness Center.

NJCU (2-2, 1-0) was led by the quartet of Destiny Battle (East Orange, N.J./East Orange STEM Academy), Kendra Rigo (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic), Na'Tori Postell, and Autumn John (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway). In the low-scoring affair, they each scored eight points in the win with John adding a team-high 11 rebounds. Ramapo (1-6, 0-1) suffered a season-high 40 turnovers in the loss. Alison Ahern collected a game-high 17 points and pulled down 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the year.

With a two-minute scoring drought early on, Elainy Pichardo (Union City, N.J./Union City) provided a spark for the Gothic Knights, converting a layup to give NJCU a 6-2 lead. Postell followed up with a long-range bucket which put NJCU ahead by five, their largest lead of the quarter. Ramapo, however, would remain in striking distance, carrying a three-point deficit into the second stanza.

Five minutes into the second quarter, Ramapo had taken the lead with back-to-back layups as they took advantage of a five-minute scoreless spell by the Gothic Knights. Olivia Wooten (East Orange, N.J./Immaculate Conception) woke the offense up with a layup and cut the lead down to one. Both offenses would go dormant once again until the final moments of the half which allowed Ramapo to take a three-point lead into the locker room.

After an early battle with the lead jockeying back-and-forth, NJCU took control behind a three-point basket by Wooten. Battle extended the Gothic Knights' lead with a pair of free throws, pushing their lead out to five before both offenses struggled in the final two minutes of the quarter.

A strong opening to the fourth quarter saw NJCU's lead balloon out to 12 due to a six-minute stretch where Ramapo was unable to find the bottom of the nylon. Ramapo eventually got its offense going again and came within six but NJCU prevented its lead from being shrunk any further with a 15-6 run to close out the game.
