Men's Wrestling Shines at Wilkes Quad, Goes 2-1 on the Day

Gothic Knights Secure Dominant Wins Over Elmira and Keystone, Face Tough Challenge from Wilkes

WILKES-BARRE, PA. - New Jersey City University (NJCU) men's wrestling had a strong showing across three rounds of competition, going 2-1 on the day at the Wilkes Quad, hosted by Wilkes.

In Round 1, NJCU defeated Elmira 35-15 in a dominant performance. The team started strong with freshman Dominic Terracciano (Keansburg, N.J./Keansburg) (125) and junior Lucas Torre (Point Pleasant, N.J./Brick Memorial) (133) both winning by forfeit. At 141, sophomore Dean Constantino earned a quick fall in 1:01, setting the tone for the match. Junior Zack Vera (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) (149) followed up with another fall, this time at 1:35, extending NJCU's lead. Senior Mikey Cross (Union, N.J./Union City) (157) continued the momentum with a commanding tech fall (18-3). Despite a couple of losses, NJCU recovered with a strong performance by freshman Fabian Acuna (Somerville, N.J./Somerville) who secured a fall at 2:59 in the 184 matchup. 

In Round 2, NJCU continued their strong performance with a 40-9 win over Keystone. Once again, they benefited from several forfeit victories, including Terraciano at 125, Torre at 133, and Constantino at 141. At 149, Vera earned another fall at 2:25, while Candelario (157) added a fall of his own at 1:58. The team didn't slow down, with Viera (174) claiming a 24-14 major decision over his opponent. Acuna added another fall at 1:52, and the team cruised to a 40-9 victory, collecting their second dual victory of the season.

However, in Round 3, NJCU faced a tough test in Wilkes, a team that dominated the round with a 36-12 win. The match began strong for the Gothic Knights with Terracciano (125) securing a 16-4 major decision over Wilke's Finnegan and Torre (133) defeating Kerwin with a 7-0 decision. Vera won the 149 matchup with a tech fall against Bettencourt (20-4), but the Green and Gold ultimately fell in the end.

In exhibition matches, sophomore Andy Beras (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) impressed with a fall over Wilkes' Murphy at 3:49, and another fall over Elmira's Stauring at 1:05.
