Women's Basketball Falls in Season Opener to Johns Hopkins, 72-55

BALTIMORE, MD - Tahirah Kelley (Linden, N.J./Immaculate Conception) tallied 20 points in the 72-55 loss to Johns Hopkins on Saturday evening to open the 2024-25 campaign.

NJCU (0-1) also received a team-high 12 rebounds from Kendra Rigo (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) while Destiny Battle (East Orange, N.J./East Orange STEM Academy) added 12 points. Johns Hopkins (1-0) shot 45.2% from the floor with Macie Feldman, Greta Miller, and Michaela O'Neil all scoring 13 points each.

Kelley propelled the Gothic Knights to an early lead, with a three-point bucket and a successful jumper. Johns Hopkins responded quickly scoring eight straight points to take the lead. With 3:48 remaining in the first quarter, the Gothic Knights trailed by one before using a 6-0 run to regain the lead. Rigo would convert from range to put NJCU up six heading into the second stanza.

The Gothic Knights pushed their lead out to 9 to start the second half and held onto at least a six-point lead until the halfway point. Johns Hopkins cut the lead down to three and eventually brought it down to one right before the halftime buzzer.

The momentum began to change in the third quarter as Johns Hopkins flipped the score in their favor, 35-32. Autumn John (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) briefly gave NJCU a one-point lead on a fast break layup, before a three-point basket gave the lead back to Johns Hopkins. With 2:53 in the third, Battle cashed in on a two-point bucket to knot the game at 42. At that point, the Gothic Knights' offense stalled for the remainder of the quarter as Johns Hopkins took advantage and increased their lead to 9 before heading to the final quarter of play.

NJCU's offensive woes carried over to the final quarter as their offense was unable to close the gap against Johns Hopkins late in the game.
