Men’s Wrestling Faces Challenges at Roger Williams Duals

December 07, 2024

BRISTOL, RI – The New Jersey City University (NJCU) men's wrestling team encountered a tough day at the Roger Williams Duals, hosted by Roger Williams University on Saturday, Dec. 7. The Gothic Knights (5-10) struggled in their matchups, falling to all three opponents: Rhode Island College, Western New England, and Roger Williams.

In their opening match against Rhode Island College (2-3), NJCU fell 35-16. Freshman Dominic Terracciano (Keansburg, N.J./Keansburg) kicked off the competition with a forfeit win in the 125-pound class. Lucas Torre (Point Pleasant, N.J./Brick Memorial) followed with a solid 13-7 decision at 133 pounds, and Dean Costantino (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) earned a dominant 23-6 technical fall in his 141-pound match. Junior Zack Vera (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) added a 5-2 decision in the 149-pound bout, but forfeits in several weight classes and losses in the 197 and 285-pound matches contributed to the Gothic Knights' defeat.

The team then faced Western New England (6-2) in the second round, losing 35-15. Terracciano again set the tone with a 17-5 major decision in the 125 class, while Torre responded with a pin in the 133-pound matchup. Costantino secured a technical fall even when down 19-34, but forfeits in multiple weight classes and a pin in the 149-pound match put NJCU at a disadvantage. Vera earned a win at 157 pounds, but the team was unable to make up the deficit.

In their final match of the day against Roger Williams (5-2), the Gothic Knights fell 32-18. Terracciano and Torre both won with pins in their respective weight classes, and Costantino followed with a 9-4 decision in the 141-pound bout. Vera also won his match at 157 pounds with a 10-8 decision. However, forfeits in key weight classes and losses in the 149, 165, 174, 184, and 197-pound matches ultimately led to NJCU's third defeat of the day.

The Gothic Knights will look to bounce back when they return to action on Saturday, Dec. 14, as they head to King's College for the King's (Pa.) Duals, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
