FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — The New Jersey City University women's basketball, fresh off its drubbing of Stockton University at home on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 10, played its second game in as many days on Sunday afternoon, Feb. 11, on the road at non-conference foe and perennial NCAA Division III Tournament contender, the University of Mary Washington. A tough first quarter ultimately did the Gothic Knights in as they lost to the Eagles, 71-57.
NJCU (16-8) spotted Mary Washington (14-8) eight points to start the first quarter, as the home team ran out to an 8-0 lead before the Gothic Knights got on the board. The Eagles eventually built up a 12-point lead before a couple of free throws to end the quarter by junior guard
Alaisha Mumford (Jersey City, N.J./Lincoln) cut it back down to 10. Quarter number two was a deadlock, with each team scoring 18 points apiece to head into the half with Mary Washington up, 36-26. Mumford and senior guard
Damaris Rodriguez (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) led the Green and Gold with seven points each in the first 20 minutes.
The Eagles went up by as many as 17 at 50-33 with 2:11 left in the third, but a quick 6-0 run for NJCU cut it back down to 11 at 50-39 to end the quarter. Mary Washington then took another large lead in the fourth, this time by 19, but the Gothic Knights clawed back into it, once again, with an 8-0 run, started off by back-to-back three-point plays by senior forward
Dayjah Anderson (East Orange, NJ/Newark Tech) and sophomore guard
Tahirah Kelley (Linden, N.J./Immaculate Conception), as well as a lay-in from Rodriguez. Unfortunately, NJCU was unable to get any closer than that, falling by 14 to the Eagles.
