CAMDEN, N.J. – The New Jersey City men's basketball team closed out their 2023-24 campaign with a road New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) win against Rutgers-Camden on Wednesday night, Feb. 14. The squad shot efficiently both inside and outside the arc en-route to their 84-78 victory, while also knocking the Scarlet Raptors out of postseason contention.
NJCU (8-17, 5-13 NJAC) held an early lead in the first half, with points coming from nearly the entire starting unit. Senior forward
Daniel Rodriguez (Newark, N.J./Hudson Catholic) scored six of his 20 points in just the first five minutes of action, but the Scarlet Raptors (13-12, 8-10 NJAC) battled back and tied the game back at 14. From there, Rutgers-Camden regained and held a lead until 1:06 when Rodriguez cashed in a short jumper to get up to 10 first-half points. A Rutgers-Camden layup at 0:44 put NJCU trailing by one going into the intermission.
Rodriguez, who had the final two field goals in the first 20 minutes of play, opened up the second half with back-to-back buckets and brought Jersey City back out in front. Like the first half, both teams traded baskets and leads, and were tied at 52 with 11:42 remaining. A dunk by junior forward
Ryan Savoy (Lakewood, N.J./Lakewood) sparked a Gothic Knights run, and the team led by as many as 11. Down by six with 1:42 to go, Rutgers-Camden sunk all three free throws after a foul beyond the arc, forcing NJCU to finish out the game by hitting free throws. Junior guard
Jaheim Lewis (Hillside, N.J./Hillside) and sophomore guard
Bakhi Rogers-Robinson (Orange, N.J./West Caldwell Tech) went a combined 9-10 from the charity stripe and secured the Gothic Knights win.
Highlights:
- Overall, NJCU shot 55.6 percent from the field and from three.
- Seven Gothic Knights shot 50 percent or better from the field, including Savoy who just missed one out of his eight field goals attempts.
- Lewis, junior guard
Hakeem Wilson (Newark, N.J./North Star Academy), and senior guard
Will Brown III (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic) were all perfect from the line.
