Women's Basketball Dominates Rutgers-Newark, Slides up to Second in NJAC Standings

All 14 Active Gothic Knights See Time as 12 Find the Basket

JERSEY CITY, N.J. — After a first half in which the New Jersey City University women's basketball team outscored Rutgers-Newark, 41-12, the Gothic Knights officially dispatched their New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) counterparts by a final of 84-33 on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 3, at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center (JMAC) — it was the largest margin of victory for the program since a 94-point win over the City College of New York (120-26) back on Dec. 6, 2021. NJCU's victory, coupled with losses by The College of New Jersey and Kean University, slid up to second place in the NJAC standings with just three conference games remaining in the regular season.

Freshman guard Na'tori Postell (Passaic, N.J./Passaic Arts & Science Charter) scored a game-high-tying 12 points on the day, scoring nine of those early on by sinking all three of her first three-point shots over the first four minutes of the game. Overall, NJCU (13-7, 11-4 NJAC) closed out the first quarter on a 14-1 run to take a 27-9 advantage into the second against the Scarlet Raiders (2-20, 1-14 NJAC). Leading by 19 at 29-10 with 8:19 to go in the half, the Gothic Knights closed out the second on a 12-2 run.

After Rutgers-Newark posted the first points of the second half, the Green and Gold then went on a 15-2 run to go up by 40 at the time at 56-16 with 4:49 to go. The Scarlet Raiders cut the deficit down a bit, but NJCU made the final basket to make it 61-22 at the end of the third. That kicked off an 11-0 run, which carried over into the fourth via three three-pointers in a row from junior guards Olivia Wooten (East Orange, N.J./Immaculate Conception) and Alaisha Mumford (Jersey City, N.J./Lincoln), as well as senior guard Damaris Rodriguez (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus). NJCU went up by 52 on a few occasions before taking the game by 51 at 84-33.

Highlights:
- Mumford finished with 11 points and a game-high-tying five assists.
- Senior guard Alex Sams (Burlington City, N.J./Burlington City) chipped in 10 points over 21 minutes, going 3-of-7 from long range.
- Senior forward Dayjah Anderson (East Orange, NJ/Newark Tech) dished out five assists, as well, and finished with a team-high-tying 10 boards to go with nine points and two steals.
- Junior guard Salma Eddahiri (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic) saw 13 minutes of action and was 4-of-6 for eight points.
- Sophomore guard Elyssa Russo (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) chipped in eight points, as well.
- Senior forward Sarah Edmond (Bloomfield, NJ/Bloomfield) also had 10 rebounds to go with four points. She has double digit rebounds in three straight.
