GLASSBORO, N.J. – The New Jersey City University men's basketball team looked to make it two straight New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) wins Wednesday night, Feb. 7, traveling south to play Rowan. Unfortunately, they were unable to dig themselves out of a 12-point first half deficit and fell 99-87.
Jersey City (7-16, 4-12 NJAC) battled the Profs (18-5, 12-4 NJAC) for a majority of the first half. There were numerous lead changes, and the Gothic Knights had a 31-30 advantage with 6:14 remaining before intermission. Junior guard
Jaheim Lewis (Hillside, N.J./Hillside) had 11 first-half points, while senior guard
Will Brown III (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic) also poured in eight of his own. Rowan began to pick up the scoring, and closed the half on a 21-8 run, taking a 51-39 lead.
Lewis scored on back-to-back possessions after a Rowan layup to open up the second half, and cut the Profs lead down to 10. The Gothic Knights were able to get within six points multiple times, but ultimately could not get closer to take back the lead. Brown III, junior forward
Ryan Savoy (Lakewood, N.J./Lakewood), and junior guard
Hakeem Wilson (Newark, N.J./North Star Academy) all hit three-pointers to get back within 10 in the final minutes, but Rowan sank their free throws then got a layup to go with 0:42 remaining, ending hopes of an NJCU comeback.
Highlights:
- NJCU tied a season-high in three-pointers made with eight.
