YAPHANK, N.Y. — The New Jersey City University baseball team got back in the win column while on the road tonight, Tuesday, Mar. 19, after defeating the Bearcats of Baruch College 11-6. The Gothic Knights scored a season-high 11 runs to pick up their third victory of the year.
Jersey City (3-6) got the game started with a double by freshman right fielder
Jeremy Ricourt (Perth Amboy, N.J./JFK Memorial). Baruch (0-7) retired the following two batters, but fifth year left fielder
Bryan Fernandez (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville War Memorial) tripled to right-center to score Ricourt. Freshman center fielder
Ray Gelok (Clifton, N.J./Passaic Tech) then homered to right, giving NJCU an early 3-0 lead. In the home half of the inning, Baruch scored two right back on a home run to right field.
After a scoreless second inning for both squads, Ricourt reached on an error by the Baruch third baseman, then advanced to second on a wild pitch and tagged up after a flyout by sophomore designated hitter
Dom Yarson (Ewing, N.J./Ewing). Freshman first baseman
Enrique Beltra (Monroe, N.J./Ranney) brought Ricourt home to give the Gothic Knights a 4-2 lead. In the bottom of the third, the Bearcats plated two runs to tie the game up at 4-4.
In the top of the fifth, Yarson led off with a double down the left field line, and Beltra reached on an error on a pop up to the Bearcats catcher. Fernandez then also reached on an error by the pitcher, loading the bases for Gelok. Gelok brought two Gothic Knight runners home with a double, then senior third baseman Garrett Allso doubled scoring Gelok and Fernandez. Later in the inning, NJCU had runners on first and third, and a balk by the Baruch pitcher scored Allo from third and gave the squad a 9-4 lead. Rookie right-hander
Danny Olear (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) pitched scoreless fifth and sixth innings after relieving Wallraff in the fourth.
With two outs in the top of the seventh, senior second baseman
Justin Moreno (Brooklyn, N.Y./Trenton Catholic) homered to left, scoring Allo who had reached base on an error earlier in the inning, giving NJCU an 11-4 lead. Baruch battled back in their half of the inning, scoring two and cutting the lead to 11-6. Those runs would be the last of the game for either team, as the Gothic Knight bullpen held it down. Fifth year right-hander
Berto Reyes (Elizabeth, N.J./Elizabeth) came in for a single out in the seventh, and junior right-hander
Andre Dean (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) pitched scoreless eighth and ninth innings.
