Softball Falls to Pikeville Down in Myrtle Beach

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — The New Jersey City University softball squad squared off with the University of Pikeville on Monday evening, March 4, as part of the FastPitch Dreams Spring Classic. The Gothic Knights suffered the tough, 6-0, loss to the Bears at a secondary site.

Senior righthander Emily Tunney (Mays Landing, N.J./Oakcrest), who has been NJCU's (1-2) primary centerfielder to start the season, got the nod in the circle for this one and tossed 4.0 quality innings, allowing three earned runs on seven hits with a couple of strikeouts, but was saddled with the loss on the night against UPike (3-5).

Offensively, the Gothic Knights got some individual production out of junior second base Jordan Mendolla (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic), once again, as she went 1-for-2 with a double, a walk and a stolen base. Junior catcher Abby Castro (Clifton, N.J./Passaic County Tech) finished 1-for-3 with a two-bagger, as well. Junior first base Jaelynn Barrios (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) was also 1-for-2, while senior designated player Mariah Villanueva (Jersey City, N.J./McNair Academic) had a double on her 1-for-2 evening.
