PITMAN, N.J. — The New Jersey Athletic Conferfence (NJAC) released its weekly award winners today, Monday, April 15, and for the second time this season, New Jersey City University freshman pitcher
Ricky Del Rio (Edison, N.J./St. Thomas Aquinas) was named NJAC Rookie Pitcher of the Week.
Del Rio had another stellar week on the mound for NJCU, making three appearances over the Gothic Knights six games, including one start, as his squad went 3-3. Overall, he tossed 8.0 innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts and his notched second save of the season, limiting opponents to a .207 batting average. The rookie righthander began with the start in game one on Tuesday, April 9, a 5-3 road loss to St. Joseph's University-Long Island, tossing 4.0 of the shortened 7.0-inning game, allowing two earned on four hits with a couple of strikeouts in Patchogue, N.Y.
Del Rio bounced back in a big way, though, coming out of the bullpen to toss the eighth and ninth innings on Thursday, April 11, in the 8-3 road win at Rutgers-Newark – he did not allow a hit or a run, facing the minimum six batters. Then, in the Saturday, April 13, 6-4 victory at The College of New Jersey, he closed out his week with a two-inning save, once again shutting down opposing batters with no runs and just two hits with a couple more Ks down in Ewing, N.J.
