JERSEY CITY, N.J. — The College Sports Communicators (CSC) — formerly known as CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) — released its annual Academic All-District At-Large teams today, Tuesday, June 25, and New Jersey City University landed six student-athletes among the selections, with five coming from the women's bowling program and one from men's volleyball.
The updated qualifications for the distinction of CSC Academic All-District for Fall, Winter, Spring and At-Large sport programs are as follows — student-athletes must have AT LEAST a 3.50 cumulative grade point average and have started at least 66 percent of the team's contests or played in at least 90 percent of the team's contests. For women's bowling specifically, selections have to compete in a minimum of four competitions OR have at least one top-eight finish at a conference championship meet.
Sophomore setter
Alex Casais (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) of the Gothic Knights men's volleyball program picked up the honors for the first time in his career after putting together a Second Team All-Skyline Conference season as the squad's primary setter. He finished the season with 9.00 assists per set, which ranked 31st in all of NCAA Division III, second in the Skyline and third in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC).
For the NJCU women's bowling program, seniors
Rebecca Hoff (Colonia, N.J./Colonia), captain
Meagan Raimondo (Woodbridge, N.J./Woodbridge),
Rebecca Kain (Keansburg, N.J./Keansburg),
Samantha Szymanski (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville War Memorial) and junior
Anna Trachsler (Carteret, N.J./Carteret) all earned the CSC Academic All-District distinction — all are first-time honorees, aside from Szymanski, who earned the same honor as a women's soccer student-athlete earlier this year. Hoff was the Division III Statistical Leader this season in traditional frame average, a First Team All-Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) selection, a one-time AMCC Bowling of the Week and an AMCC All-Tournament Team honoree.
Raimondo was a Third Team All-AMCC honoree this season, as well as an AMCC All-Sportsmanship Team selection and NJCU's Female Rising Knight Award winner. Kain rolled the third-most frames on the team, behind only Hoff and Raimondo, and averaged 15.20 per frame. Trachsler was fourth on the team in frames bowled and averaged 14.35 per frame. Szymanski was fifth on the team in frames bowled, but third behind only Hoff and Raimondo with 16.24 per frame.
Voting among the nation's Division III Athletic Communications professionals is now taking place until Tuesday, July 2, and the Academic All-America Teams will be announced on July 16 (women's) and July 17 (men's).
