NEWARK, N.J. – Four Gothic Knights scored to lead the New Jersey City University women's soccer team to a dominant 6-0 victory over Purchase at the Brick City Classic, hosted by Rutgers-Newark. NJCU's defense was stellar, holding the Panthers to zero shots and securing a season-opening shutout.
Junior forward
Ari Flores-Ortiz (Little Falls, N.J./Passaic Valley Regional) opened the scoring in the ninth minute with an assist from junior midfielder
Nyrohah Alvarenga (North Bergen, N.J./High Tech). In the 36
th minute, fifth-year forward
Kim Brites (Carteret, N.J./Carteret) extended the lead to 2-0, backed by junior back
Jess Digristina (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee).
Cardona then took over, netting three consecutive goals to complete her first collegiate hat trick. Her goals were scored in the 36th and 43rd minutes of the first half, as well as the 53rd minute of the second half. Junior midfielders
Joselyn Reyes (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) and
Gabriela Rodriguez (Elizabeth, N.J./Frank J. Cicarell Academy), along with Brites, contributed assists on one of Cardona's goals. Junior midfielder
Arianna Chavez (Roselle Park, N.J./Union County Votech) rounded out the scoring with the sixth goal, assisted by Flores-Ortiz.
