CHESTER, Pa. — The New Jersey City University women's volleyball team competed in a road tri-match on Saturday, Sept. 21, against host Widener University and neutral opponent Neumann University. The Green and Gold began with a three-set defeat at the hands of the Knights before falling to the host Pride in three later in the afternoon.
NJCU (4-7) played all three sets closely with Neumann (5-8) despite the loss in what was a very tight match. Senior captain outside hitter
Brenda Gonzalez (Union City, N.J./Dickinson) was very efficient, notching a team-best 11 kills and just one error on 33 swings for a .303 hitting percentage. She also tallied two aces, a block and 12 digs for the fourth double-double of her career. Juniors right-side hitter
Kiki Lugo (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) and outside hitter
Marina Millett (Matawan, N.J./Saint John Vianney) each had seven kills apiece, as well as eight digs by the latter. Sophomore libero
Carly Everett (York, Pa./York Catholic) was strong on the back line as well, leading all players with 13 digs.
Things were a little tougher against Widener (10-4) as the Pride did not allow the Gothic Knights to get much going. Gonzalez once again led NJCU in kills with six, while Lugo and Millett each had five and latter had three aces. Everett was also strong defensively once again, giving her squad a team-high 13 digs.
