JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The NJCU men's soccer team faced a tough start to their NJAC campaign, falling 2-0 to #16 Montclair State on Friday, Sept. 27, at MSU Soccer Park.
Despite a strong defensive effort, the Gothic Knights (6-2-3) struggled to capitalize on their scoring opportunities in the first half. Montclair State (6-2-1) struck first with a penalty kick and added a second goal, heading into halftime with a 2-0 lead.
In the second half, NJCU's freshman midfielder
Denilson Salinas (Callao, Peru/Kearny) nearly reduced the deficit just moments after the whistle, but the Red Hawks' goalkeeper was up to the task. The Gothic Knights had a chance from a free kick after a yellow card was issued to a Montclair player, but fifth-year midfielder
Thiago Duarte's (Newark, N.J./Newark East Side) shot was also saved.
NJCU's defense tightened in the second half, limiting Montclair State to just one shot on goal.
