COLLEGEVILLE, PA. – The New Jersey City University (NJCU) women's wrestling team finished seventh out of 18 teams at the Will Abele Open, hosted by Ursinus College, on Saturday, Jan. 18. Senior
Izabella Frezzo (East Rutherford, N.J./Becton Regional) and sophomore
Fabiana Josa (Churchville, Pa./International Christian School) took home gold in their respective weight classes, while freshman
Nuria Kojic (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) secured a sixth-place finish at 117 pounds.
Frezzo represented the Gothic Knights in the 110-pound bracket, receiving a bye in the round of 16 and securing a 10-0 tech fall in 21 seconds against Leilani Martinez of Cedar Crest in the quarterfinals. This tech fall marked her 10th of the season. In the semifinals, she claimed another tech fall victory over Erin Rizzuto in 4:16 (12-2). Moving on to the championship match, she faced Emily Klein of ESU, winning the bracket in 2:35 with a tech fall (10-0). She leads NJCU in technical falls (12) and wins (16) and broke the program record for most technical falls in a season, which was previously nine.
Josa wrestled up in the 180-pound bracket, where she dominated her opponents with pins in both the quarterfinals and semifinals. In the quarterfinals, she pinned Allison Brandt of York College in 3:45 (6-0), and in the semifinals, she pinned Mikayla Maloy of Western New England in 1:17 (2-0). In the finals, she took home first place with a 1:07 pin against Hazel Dahlquist (2-0).
Kojic wrestled in the 117-pound bracket, where she started with a bye in the round of 32. She advanced by securing a 9-0 decision in the round of 16 over Melanie Val of Cedar Crest. In the consolation bracket, she earned two pins—one in 2:13 (6-2) and another in 1:27 (6-0). With four wrestlers remaining in the consolation bracket, she pinned Elizabeth Galladay of Centenary in 46 seconds (4-0), advancing to the fifth-place bout. Kojic ultimately fell to Dianna Pineda of Alfred State, finishing in sixth place.
Freshman
Sophia Garcia (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) competed in the 117-pound bracket, finishing with a record of 1-2, including her first collegiate technical fall. Junior
Natalia Morales () and senior
Claire Daity (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) both wrestled in the 131-pound bracket, finishing 0-2. Freshman
Citaly Condado (Somerset, N.J./Franklin) represented in the 160-pound bracket, finishing 1-2 on the day, collecting her first collegiate pin (0:44) in the consolation bracket.
Senior
Kayla Zeppetelli (Little Ferry, N.J./Ridgefield Park) had a strong start in the 138-pound bracket, securing a 23-second pin and a 6-2 decision, but ultimately fell in the quarterfinals by technical fall. She bounced back in the consolation bracket, earning a 1:25 pin in the round of eight, but was pinned in the following round, finishing the day with a 3-2 record.
Josa, Kojic, and Zeppetelli lead NJCU with seven pins.
