Men's Volleyball Splits Tri-Match Against #2 NYU & Arcadia

NEW YORK, NY - The New Jersey City Univerity men's volleyball team hit the road for a tri-match through the tunnel against #2 New York University and Arcadia on Saturday, January 25.

Match 1: #2 NYU 3, NJCU 0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-22)

NJCU (1-4) moved to 0-8 all-time with the loss to NYU this afternoon. The Gothic Knights hit .108 as a team led by Marcus Pardasie's (Paramus, N.J./Cresskill) .208 hitting and 10 kills. Matt Peralta (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) added seven kills and four digs while Alex Casais (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) paced the team with 24 assists. Victor De Souza (Newark, N.J./Newark East Side) recorded three of the team's five total blocks in the match. NYU (5-0) hit a red-hot .472 as a team led by a scorching .800 hit percentage in the opening set. Emerson Evans hit .375 and led the Violets with 12 kills and three digs. Devyn Nguyen secured 21 assists while Matthew Warter tallied three service aces.

The Gothic Knights opened the match with a kill by De Souza, however, it was uphill the rest of the set as NYU responded with a 7-2 run. A kill by Mike McGehee (Avondale, Ariz./Agua Fria) brought the Gothic Knights within three, marking the last kill for NJCU in the set, but the Gothic Knights couldn't string together points as NYU used another run to stretch their lead.

In set two, the Violets began in the driver's seat but wouldn't remain there as a kill by Peralta sparked a 6-0 for the Gothic Knights capped by a kill from De Souz to put NJCU ahead 12-10. That lead, however, wouldn't last long as NYU put together a 10-1 run, only interrupted by a service error, to propel themselves ahead 23-15. Peralta tried to ignite a surge in the Gothic Knights' offense with a kill but NYU prevented any run to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

The third set was a much more balanced affair with both teams trading points throughout the set.  Late in the set, Pardasie capped a 3-0 stretch by the Gothic Knights to knot the set at 19 before tying it again at 20. The Violets finally broke the stalemate with a 3-0 run to close out the match and keep their record unblemished.

Match 2: NJCU 3, Arcadia 2 (25-19, 25-19, 25-14, 25-18, 19-17)

NJCU (2-4) improved its hitting from the first match and hit .139 as a team. Marcus Pardasie (Paramus, N.J./Cresskill) once again led the team with 17 kills, his third straight match this season with double-digit kills. Casais collected a season-high 38 assists in the five-set win and Anthony Matute (Passaic, N.J./Passaic Charter) led the team with 13 digs. Arcadia (2-3) picked up a team-high 12 kills from Mike Carr while Riley Kodidek secured 44 assists.

NJCU and Arcadia battle back-and-forth in the early goings of the first set as neither team was able to secure a foothold in the match. Arcadia made their imprint on the set halfway through, using a 10-3 run to secure the lead. Pardasie helped put a point in NJCU's column with a kill, however, the Gothic Knights' offense was stifled as Arcadia took a 1-0 lead in the match.

The Gothic Knights leveled play in the second set, despite a 6-0 run by Arcadia. Amaru Perales (Harrison, N.J./Harrison) helped right the ship when Arcadia was gaining momentum with a kill. That kill sparked a 5-0 for the Gothic Knights that would carry them to the win.

The third set began much like the first two with each team trading blows. It wasn't until the 11-10 mark that things began to run away from the Gothic Knights. Arcadia exploded for a 12-1 run, broken up by a Justin Walker (Paterson, N.J./Paterson Charter) kill. A service error ended the run but NJCU couldn't muster up the offense to steal the set as they fell behind 2-1.

NJCU found its stride in the fourth set as they picked apart Arcadia's defense with two service aces and six kills in the opening 12 points. Peralta and Johan Vaidyan (Piscataway, N.J./Saint Joseph) added back-to-back kills for the Gothic Knights to set up a 5-2 down the stretch to send the match into a fifth set.

In a set that normally ends at 15 points, the Gothic Knights and Arcadia decided the fans deserved more as they pushed past that total. A kill by Peralta and Casais put NJCU ahead 9-7 before Arcadia took control of the set 12-9 with a 5-0 run. NJCU responded with a run of their own to take back the lead 13-12. The teams matched each other, going point for point, until Pardasie secured the win with a kill.

FROM HEAD COACH CARLO EDRA
"The last two times we played Arcadia we lost heart breakers in five sets both times. Today's win was a big confidence boost, especially with how young of a team we are. In the 5th set, we had four freshmen and one sophomore on the court and they all stepped up. I was extremely proud of the guys today."
