Explosive Second Half Surges Men's Basketball Past Montclair, 80-74

MONTCLAIR, NJ - An explosive second half surged the New Jersey City University men's basketball team past Montclair, 80-74, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) clash on Wednesday, January 8.

NJCU (9-4, 4-2) picked up its third straight win behind a 21-point outing from Jaheim Lewis (Hillside, N.J./Hillside) and a 19-point outing from Hakeem Wilson (Newark, N.J./North Star Academy). On the boards, Raymond Ezike (Newark, N.J./Westside) paced the team with 11 rebounds. Montclair (8-5, 3-3) shot 37.1% from the floor and was led by Mike Jackson's 25 points.

Both offenses got off to a slow start as the game was tied at eight through the first seven minutes. Montclair found its stride and pushed its lead out to seven behind an Ahmad Robertson three-pointer with 9:43 remaining in the half. As the half came to a close, Wilson added three points via an and one before Montclair hit a three-pointer to take a six-point lead into the locker room.

The Gothic Knights came out scorching hot in the second half and quickly erased their deficit in four minutes. Bahki Rogers-Robinson put NJCU ahead, 49-46, with a long-range bucket before Wilson followed up with one of his own. NJCU's lead swelled to 10 points at the 13:40 mark thanks to a layup from Avante Gilbert (Paterson, N.J./International). Gilbert went on to give the Gothic Knights their largest lead of the game (14) with 7:40 on the clock. Montclair, however, began to gain steam and eventually cut the lead down to four with two minutes remaining in the game. Raymond gave the Gothic Knights a cushion with a layup before fouling out of the game. The Red Hawks put a scare into NJCU, coming within three in the final seconds but free-throws would close the game out in favor of NJCU.
