Men's Soccer Drops NJAC Game Against Ramapo, 4-1

JERSEY CITY, NJ | The New Jersey City University (NJCU) men's soccer team dropped a crucial New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) match against Ramapo College on Wednesday afternoon at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex, 4-1.

NJCU (4-9-2, 1-4) edged the Roadrunners 15-14 in shots, however, it was Ramapo who put more on frame with five. Augusto Vieira (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) led the charge for the Gothic Knights with five shots, while Camilo Pascual Verdu made two saves in the loss. Ramapo (9-4-1, 2-3) was led by Gianfranco Ponce with five shots and two goals. In net, Zachary Natt had a game-high three saves.

Both squads tested the opposing keeper early on, trading shots, however, it was Dylan Perez who cracked the code for Ramapo in the 33rd minute. An errant pass by the Gothic Knights bounced off of a Ramapo player and fell to the foot of Perez, who hit a low, driven shot off of the left post and into the back of the net. NJCU responded by sending three shots towards Natt, but only one required a save.

Out of the break, Ramapo came out determined to find their second marker of the game. In the 55th minute, they did just that. Ponce took a short pass from Luigi Portillo just outside the box and found an opening to hammer the shot into the back of the net. The Gothic Knights responded quickly, opening their scoring ledger just 10 minutes later. Max Bzuikiewicz slid a pass to Kenneth Valladares (Union City, N.J./Union City) inside the 18, where he was able to hit his shot under a diving Natt for the goal.

As the game wore on, both teams continued their attacks, but it wasn't until the 85th minute that Ramapo was able to find its third of the game. Alim Lita took a slotted pass between the two NJCU defenders and beat Pascual Verdu. Ramapo struck again 50 seconds later when Ponce dribbled around the defender to beat an outstretched Pascual Verdu for the fourth goal of the game. The Gothic Knights tried to rally the team with two shots in quick succession, but were not able to beat Natt.
