Jean-Louis & Alvarenga Lift Women's Soccer Past Rutgers-Newark, 2-1, on Senior Day

JERSEY CITY, NJ | The New Jersey City University (NJCU) women's soccer team picked up a crucial New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) comeback win over Rutgers-Newark, defeating the Scarlet Raiders, 2-1 on senior day.

The win over Rutgers-Newark marks the third straight win over the Scarlet Raiders, and the fifth unbeaten.

NJCU (9-6-2, 2-4-2 NJAC) overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit behind second-half goals from Nyrohah Alvarenga (North Bergen, N.J./High Tech) and Kyanah-Belle Jean-Louis (Montreal, Canada/Washington Township (N.J.)). The Gothic Knights tallied 11 shots with five on frame, while the Scarlet Raiders took six. Alvarenga led all players with four shots, including three on goal, while Isabella Ramirez (Elmwood Park, N.J./Elmwood Park Memorial) added three attempts for the Gothic Knights. Jean-Louis' match-winner was her second goal of the season and first in NJAC play. Rutgers-Newark (8-8-2, 2-4-2 NJAC) was led offensively by Mariana Valencia, who tallied two shots and added an assist. Between the pipes, Jessica Martin (Union, N.J./David Brearley) and Lorraine Valenzuela (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) split duties, with Valenzuela being forced to make one save.

The Scarlet Raiders broke through in the 35th minute when Avril Sibaja took a chipped through ball by Valencia and beat Valenzuela low to the left side to put Rutgers-Newark up 1-0 at halftime.

Coming out of the break, NJCU wasted no time finding the equalizer. In the 47th minute, Gineth Martinez set up Alvarenga, who drove a low shot past Rutgers-Newark goalkeeper Alisha Perez to make it 1-1. Twenty minutes later, Alvarenga turned provider, threading a cross into the box that found Jean-Louis, who finished the chance in the 67th minute to give the Gothic Knights a 2-1 lead they would not relinquish.
