Vieira Scores Early, but Gothic Knights Fall to Rutgers–Newark on the Road

NEWARK, NJ | The New Jersey City University (NJCU) men's soccer team dropped a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) road match to Rutgers–Newark, 5-1, on Saturday afternoon at Frederick Douglass Field.

NJCU (4-10-4, 1-5-2 NJAC) struck first in the ninth minute as Augusto Vieira (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) netted his fifth goal of the season to give the Gothic Knights an early 1-0 lead. Vieira's strike came just before a strong stretch of play from the Scarlet Raiders, who equalized in the 37th minute. Rutgers–Newark (8-8-2, 2-5-1 NJAC) then capitalized on their momentum and took the lead minutes later with a goal from Ethan Geronimo off assists by Nicholas Calenicoff and Erick Cortes, giving the hosts a 2-1 advantage heading into halftime.

Playing down a man after a 37th-minute red card to Gerard Bocanegra (Kearny, N.J./Kearny), NJCU continued to battle but struggled to contain the Scarlet Raiders' attack. Rutgers–Newark added three second-half goals, with Cortes, Chris Osorio-Rodriguez, and Hidalgo each finding the back of the net. Osorio-Rodriguez finished with a brace, scoring in the 77th and 87th minutes.

In goal, Camilo Pascual Verdu faced a barrage of shots, making nine saves over 87 minutes of play. Dominic Cunha (Rahway, N.J./Rahway) entered in the closing moments to finish the match. NJCU was outshot 26-2 overall but limited the Scarlet Raiders to five corners and committed 16 fouls in the contest.
