Pugay Leads Gothic Knights with 12 Kills in Road Loss to Kean

UNION, NJ | The New Jersey City University (NJCU) women's volleyball team dropped a straight-set New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) matchup to Kean University, 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-19), on Tuesday night inside Harwood Arena.

NJCU (12-6, 2-5 NJAC) was led offensively by Diane Pugay (Jersey City, N.J./Infinity Institute), who recorded a team-high 12 kills, five service aces, and six digs for 17 points. Kai Fitzpatrick (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough High School) followed with 10 kills and six digs, while Rae Marrero (Medford, NY/Patchogue Medford) distributed 23 assists and added four digs and one ace. Genesis Hibbard (Groesbeck, Texas/Morristown (N.J.)) anchored the defense with a team-high 16 digs, and Kiley Jurcisin (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) contributed three kills and four digs.

As a team, NJCU tallied 28 kills and seven service aces while hitting .088 on the night.

Kean (23-5, 6-1 NJAC) hit an efficient .316 overall and was paced by Ashley Torok, who recorded 12 kills, three service aces, and seven digs. Cayley Elena Morrison added nine kills on .667 hitting, while Aubre Adams chipped in five kills and three total blocks. Setter Aspen O'Brien directed the Cougars' offense with 23 assists.

In the opening set, NJCU took an early lead after an ace from Marrero, but struggled to find rhythm as Kean capitalized on a series of attack errors to take control. Despite late kills from Pugay and Fitzpatrick, the Gothic Knights couldn't overcome the deficit, dropping the set 25-17.

The second set followed a similar pattern as NJCU battled through several tight rallies. Pugay and Fitzpatrick found success on the outside, while Marrero distributed the offense efficiently. However, a strong service run from Kean's Annabelle Valencia swung momentum, helping the Cougars pull away for a 25-16 win.

In the third, NJCU fought to extend the match, with Pugay's serving run bringing the Knights within reach midway through the frame. Despite the effort, Kean's offensive efficiency sealed the match with a 25-19 victory.
